Here is Max again,
posing with the hedgehogs which were later a part of the Great Garden Giveaway at Cambridge University Press’s Cambridge office. Now in its sixth year, the event, which gives away plants (and hedgehogs) in return for donations to EdUKaid, a charity supporting education in Tanzania, took place in pleasant sunshine, which was a relief after the terrible weather this time last year.
The obligatory ‘hard-sell’ links are to John Claudius Loudon‘s hugely successful Suburban Gardener and Villa Companion of 1838, obligatory reading for the new ‘middling sort’ who could aspire to a villa (and appropriate surroundings) in the suburbs, and to the Observations in Natural History of Leonard Jenyns, clergyman, naturalist, meteorologist and biographer of his brother-in-law, John Stevens Henslow.
PS: Later, Max, having discovered that all the hedgehogs found loving new homes, is hoping that someone will adopt him too.
